Three booklets about the early history of San Juan County, New Mexico

The latest book published by the San Juan County Historical Society (2001) is "Abandoned Cemeteries and Lesser-known Settlements of San Juan County, New Mexico" by Marilu Waybourn. This book contains glimpses of places that crop up in historical records of northern San Juan County in the early 1900s. There were at least 34 communities scattered about the area at that time.

Companion books were published in 1999 and 2000 taken from a 1947 master's thesis written by Robert W. Duke. "San Juan County: The Early Years" emphasizes the early settlement and conflicts of the pioneers. It continues into their struggle for law and order and concludes with the birth of county government and a detailed account of the struggle over the site of the county seat.

"San Juan County Roars into the '20s" picks up where "San Juan County: The Early Years" leaves off and highlights the politics of the county from its inception to 1926. Early photos are scattered throughout the book to add another dimension to the details.

These booklets are available in Currents Museum Store at the Farmington Museum at Gateway Park. Price each: $8.95. Tax each: $0.40. Shipping each: $2.00.
